Build With Purpose: How a GoHighLevel Agency Turned AI Into a Mission

Nicole and her husband run a HighLevel agency and a nonprofit serving people coming out of prison. Inside: how to use AI without losing the plot, why most clients don't need a website, and the one thing she would change about her first two years.

There's a line from this conversation with Nicole that I can't stop thinking about: "We wanted to use AI as the new cocaine."

She isn't being edgy for the algorithm. Nicole and her husband run a GoHighLevel agency and a nonprofit helping people coming out of prison. Their whole thesis is that the same hunger, hustle, and sales instinct that pushes someone into the drug game can - with the right tools - build a legitimate business that pulls money into their family and community instead of out of it.

If you run a GoHighLevel agency, this episode is worth your full attention. It's a masterclass in building with purpose, using AI without losing the plot, and selling without selling your soul.

The mission came first, the stack came second

Nicole didn't start with a SaaS pitch. She started with a problem: more than 70 million Americans have a criminal record and there aren't enough programs to reach them. Her husband lived that story. They spent two years looking for developers willing to build an app - every quote started at a million dollars.

Then ChatGPT shipped. Then HighLevel kept shipping. Suddenly the "million-dollar deposit" version of their mission became a sub-account, a few workflows, and a voice agent.

The lesson for agency owners: your stack is the cheapest part of your business. If you don't know who you're serving and why, no amount of GHL snapshots, AI voice agents, or fancy funnels will fix it.

"You don't need a website. You need leads."

Nicole said something in this conversation I've been telling people for years and they still don't believe me: most small businesses don't need a $10,000 website. They need leads, conversations, and follow-up.

She told two people in person on the day we recorded this:

"You don't need a website. You actually need leads. That's your problem. Don't go spend 10 grand for a website. It's going to kill you. It's going to kill your business. It's going to kill your mission."

If you're selling websites, funnels, or AI agents to clients who don't have foot traffic, ad spend, or a list - you're plugging the wrong hole. Every dollar they hand you instead of putting into traffic is a dollar that delays the real problem.

This is also the most common mistake I see new GHL agencies make. You sell what's easy to build, not what the client actually needs.

AI is not a "hands-off" button

Both of us have had the same conversation with the same skeptical business owner: "I just want to turn on the AI agent and not have to do anything."

That's not how this works. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

The Voice AI Agent I put in the HighLevel marketplace? The phone number on it is still mine. When prospects call to test it, my phone rings. Sometimes at midnight. I pick up because I want the real feedback - what's broken, what's confusing, what would actually move money.

Nicole did the same thing on her first big AI client (a law firm with influence but no sales). She didn't drop in an agent and ride off into the sunset. She:

1. Audited the ads first to figure out why leads weren't converting. 2. Realized the AI wasn't triggering because the form was a Facebook form, not a GoHighLevel form. (A simple automation gap she'd never had to learn before.) 3. Started calling the leads herself so she could teach the AI what real conversations sounded like.

That last point is the difference between an agency that scales and one that gets fired in 60 days. The data has to come from somewhere. Early on, that somewhere is you.

Fundamentals haven't changed - the distribution did

We spent a chunk of the conversation agreeing on something that the AI gold rush has tried to make people forget:

  • You still have to talk to humans.
  • You still have to follow up more than once.
  • You still have to run ads that are actually good.
  • You still need a system, not a vibe.

"It's the same thing we've been doing forever. It was just billboards and newspapers and handwritten letters. It hasn't changed. We've just got more fancy distractions and tools."

HighLevel is one of those tools. Lovable is one of those tools. ChatGPT is one of those tools. They all collapse the time between idea and shipped. None of them collapse the time between shipped and trusted.

If your reputation is great but your bank account isn't, you're not running a business - you're auditioning to be a celebrity. Pick one.

What Nicole would do differently if she started today

This is the part I want every new GHL agency owner to tattoo on their forearm.

When I asked her what she'd change about her first two years, she didn't say "use better software" or "find a better mentor." She said:

"Just start with one thing. Just don't try to do everything and solve everything."

She tried to learn funnels, ads, design, copywriting, automations, and AI all at once. She got talented. She didn't get paid. The unlock came when she narrowed down to one painful problem for one type of client and let the AI compound her output instead of replace her thinking.

If you're brand new to GoHighLevel, here's the practical version:

1. Pick one outcome you can deliver repeatedly. Booked appointments. Reactivated database. Missed-call text-back. Pick one. 2. Get leads or conversations into the system before you automate anything. A thousand visitors a month is the minimum data set worth optimizing. 3. Listen to the calls and read the conversations yourself for the first 100. Train the AI on what actually works in your client's voice - not what sounds good in a prompt. 4. Then scale. Then layer in the voice agent, the snapshots, the customizer, the bonus stack.

That order matters more than any tech choice you'll make this year.

Use AI to build with people, not instead of them

The line that hit hardest for me wasn't about software at all. It was Nicole reminding both of us that AI is going to disconnect people from each other if we let it - and that the antidote is doing more manual, human work on purpose.

"Don't think of automation when your life is - you don't even know what time you wake up. Lay your foundations first. Know your stuff. Know what you're doing. Ask for help."

If you run a GoHighLevel agency and you want to build something that lasts longer than the current AI hype cycle, the formula is honestly pretty boring:

  • A mission worth waking up for.
  • One offer you can deliver in your sleep.
  • Real conversations with real humans, recorded and reviewed.
  • AI agents trained on what actually converts inside your specific niche.
  • A community of operators around you so you don't have to figure it out alone.

That last one is exactly why I built Jumpstart. Come hang out. Bring your mission. We'll figure out the stack together.
